Chase Young did not show up for Day 1 of the Commanders’ voluntary OTAs, which sent Danny Rouhier off on an epic rant that you can read here:
When all was said after Danny’s five minutes of shame(ing Young), this is all Grant Paulsen could say to sum it up:
“This is emblematic and symbolic to me of this entire three-plus years now. This is the issue: for the people today who are going to say it’s voluntary and we’re haters who have to get over it, you’re the same people who, three years ago screamed at me when, after he was the rookie of the year and the only guy in the entire organization who didn’t show up to work, I said that I didn’t like that, and want the face of my franchise whose face was everywhere, to be busting his ass in the offseason to get better.”
‘A lot of people crowned him’ despite that, Grant said back then, even though he was ‘not spectacular’ as a rookie even in winning the Rookie of the Year Award – but that no-show was an early red flag.
“When he didn’t show up, a red flag went up a little bit for me, to wonder if this is the guy who is a leader of men and can lead this defense to the promised land. He showed back up eventually and did that press conference where he said he was ‘getting’ my money, boss.’ Money you can get with sacks and tackles for loss and achieving on the football field! I’m not against him getting money off the football field, too, because you should have a billion commercials – but there is enough time in the offseason to go all over the world filming those commercials, and still come to team activities.
