Did Adam Peters tip his hand with Sam Howell today?
During his meeting with the DC media at the NFL Scouting Combine, Peters talked abou finding Brock Purdy in San Francisco, saying, ‘if we knew he was gonna be that good, we’d have taken him sooner,’ but ‘now it's time to find a new quarterback.’
Did that mean the new regime doesn’t see Howell as the guy? Because, apparently, to a lot of people, it does, and JP is surprised that some are just figuring that out.
“I am kind of stunned that there appears to be a percentage of people that are like, I guess this means Sam Howell won't be the answer,” JP Finlay said. “Were there people that still thought Sam Howell was the answer?”
“You've been in this town long enough to understand we as fans in this town don't see the performance, we just see, I like that guy,” BMitch replied. “I had to get this way: I can like you, but I don't want you to be the guy on my team playing that position, because it's not about me liking you. It's, can you handle the job? So far, I don't think we really saw it; there were some games early on where you go wow, but as the season went on, there were more games that made you scratch your head than you went wild about.
Just like anybody, the light bulb can go off, and he can get to the point where things start to click, but are you really in a position to just pass up what's in front of you and not give it a try based off of the performance last year?”
JP gets it – if you like Sam, you don’t want to see him go, but the Commanders have the No. 2 pick and a chance to restart the clock at QB.
“I don’t think they should be moving on from Sam by any stretch, I don't think situation dictates that, but you're drafting at No. 2,” JP said. “You got to continue to try to improve at every position, let alone the game's most important position, and I was just surprised by it.”
“I've been hearing it the whole time, and when people ask me, I ask if they want my real opinion or just want me to make them feel good, because I already know where they're going with it,” BMitch replied. “When they don't agree, well, why are you asking me for my opinion? You don't have to agree with me, but understand I'm not coming from a place of just liking a person or not liking you. We get an opportunity to have discussions with a lot of people that make decisions, and when you take all that stuff in your experiences and the history of what you've heard, I don't think nobody is sitting there saying, oh, we got the guy after last year. But here, we will have people who are average, but then we lose our minds when they dump them to try to get better. You can’t have your cake and eat it, too.”
