A Junkies hypothetical: Should Commanders take a QB at 2 or trade a third-rounder for Justin Fields?

Three years ago, the Bears traded up to No. 11 to select Justin Fields, sending No. 20 overall, a 2021 fifth-rounder, and first and fourth-round picks in 2022 to the Giants in the swap. They then traded No. 1 overall last year to Carolina for a huge haul that included DJ Moore, this year’s first-rounder (which will be No. 1 again) and seconds in 2023 and 2025 to move down to No. 9.

They could get an even bigger haul, most likely, to deal No. 1 this year if they want to go forward with Justin Fields…but apparently could get a third-rounder for Fields if they decide to move on from him and someone wants one or two years (given his fifth-year option) to see what he can do there.

So, on Wednesday, Cakes gave Bish the hypotehticals for the Commanders: draft whichever QB they have rated highest at No. 2, or trade a third-rounder (which would be in the mid-60s) for Fields and draft either Marvin Harrison Jr. or a left tackle?

“Oh man, that’s enticing…I can see why a lot of people are done with Fields; his numbers are getting slightly better the last six weeks, but he’s missed a lot of time, and his overall numbers aren’t that great,” Bish said. “He’s intriguing with the running ability, but he’s been so sporadic and he hasn’t been consistently better, so I probably still take a QB at No. 2. But it’s a little tantalizing if I’m only giving up a third-rounder, and I could get a legit threat in Marvin Harrison Jr.”

“I don’t know if I can answer this objectively, because I'm always gonna be a guy who sides with a dual-threat rushing type of quarterback, and that's exactly the skill set that Justin Fields brings to the table,” Cakes replied. “I think a lot of times he's been kind of hamstrung by the offensive staff around him. They haven't utilized him correctly, so I’m intrigued, especially if it only costs a third round pick and I get to keep my second overall pick, and I can either get my franchise left tackle or another explosive piece.”

Of course, Cakes’ mantra is ‘select the big fat guys in rounds 2-7 and the studs are gonna score,” so yeah, he’s taking Fields and then Harrison as his weapon.
