Netflix’s “Quarterback” documentary has dropped, and while reviews have ranged from rave to one outlet calling it a “JV Hard Knocks,” there was something to be gleaned for everyone.

Including John Paul Flaim, who made an interesting observation about Eric Bieniemy during one of the Patrick Mahomes portions.

“One thing that I noticed with Mahomes: when he would talk about plays, or there’s a big play in the game, he goes to Andy Reid or Matt Nagy – there’s hardly Eric Bieniemy,” JP said. “While Mahomes is doing that, Bieniemy is looking in his notebook, or whatever. Now, this may just be editing, but I’m wondering if people who watched came away with a fear of what Bieniemy was doing in KC?”

To be fair, Nagy was the OC in Kansas City before Bieniemy, vacating that post to become Bears head coach, but why not consult the current offensive coordinator?

“At least in the first five episodes, there’s nothing from Bieniemy to Mahomes!” JP said.

That spurred EB to ask for anyone who has seen the entire run to call in if there’s any Bieniemy shine, although he was talking to someone with ‘connections to the league’ who gave him some inside intel on how Bieniemy got to DC…

“He swears, and said this to me multiple times, that the reason Bieniemy is here is that Reid was over him, and no one else wanted him,” EB said. “Not to say he won’t be good, because word on the street is he’s a hard-ass and maybe they need that, but he couldn’t go back to KC, and no one else wanted him.”

“This isn’t just a KC observation, but you see the relationship Kirk Cousins has with Kevin O’Connell, who is his head coach and played QB in the league,” JP said, “but he’s calling the plays, in Kirk’s ear the whole time, and he knows how to massage Kirk at the right times. It’s all about O’Connell-Cousins, and to me, it’s all about Reid-Mahomes, with maybe some Nagy.”

Could this be some insight into why Bieniemy has yet to earn a head coaching job?

“This is kind of what we’ve heard over the last couple years about why he can’t get a head coaching job, and the wonder was that maybe he didn’t do much in that offense,” Bish said.

“Well, now it’s put up or shut up time, because he’s going to have to put up a lot with a guy who has started one game in his career,” EB replied.
