Poor Mike Maher, our new full-time Junkies multimedia content producer, got some heat for not being as chipper as he used to be after a couple months on the job – but so far, we all agree that he's not a bust.
There is worry, however, in DC that Drake Maye could be if he's the guy selected No. 2overall by the Commanders in the Draft. That comes from the fact that Mel Kiper, THE NFL Draft guru, thinks Jayden Daniels is the second-best QB in the class, and that former NFL GM Randy Mueller has also said he's not a Drake Maye guy, because 'I haven't seen anything that wows me…I've seen a lot of film and I'm still waiting to be impressed.'
The Junkies played that audio Wednesday, heavily cringing when Mueller said 'I see more of a little bigger Mac Jones…his arm strength to me is, is ordinary for NFL levels' – and, yeah, that's cause for concern.
"That's one person's opinion, but when your comp is Mac Jones? I am officially punting on that," Cakes said. "That is a terrifying comparison."
"You guys can diminish this guy, but he is a long-time executive, so he's got a valid opinion," EB replied, before explaining how Mueller's thoughts on JJ McCarthy as a potential Top 10 pick validated his own feelings on the Michigan QB…just not at No. 2.
"If you think Jayden Daniels is special, like more special than Drake Maye, you can't punt that away and say we're gonna pick McCarthy at 15 and trade down," Cakes said. "This is not the time to do that."
"He may be proven right, but I've seen more opinions from people plugged in, that much more positive on Drake Maye than that," JP replied as Bish added this: "Tim Hasselbeck on ESPN says he's about as perfect of a prospect that I've seen in 15 years. It's a matter of opinion, eye of the beholder, right?"
Yes, and Cakes' eyes say no!
"Mac Jones is so toxic that if you get mentioned in the same breath as him, you immediately go on Cakes' FUBAR list," Valdez joked.
Maybe there's one beholder to watch?
"I think the guy to watch is Rick Spielman, who is part of the committee and does a mock draft every week," JP said. "What does he say about No. 2? Way back in October, he said he would've done everything in his power to trade up and take Drake Maye, given the drop-off in this class."
"Dan Orlovsky says Drake Maye is the best quarterback in the 2024 NFL draft class," Bish replied, and then the dagger from EB: "Dan Orlovsky also ran out of bounds like a clueless…but Mueller is the first guy I've seen that says Maye is butt."
