Commanders fans are showing up en masse for camp practices, with attendance reaching into the five figures for Saturday’s “Back Together Weekend” event.
A HUGE contrast to last year, when it was “a couple of donks in lawn chairs out there,” but as JP said about Saturday and the Dan Snyder sale party, “the sea of burgundy and gold blew me away.”
“The fan base has been beaten up and dormant during the last few years of the Dan Snyder era,” Cakes replied. “They just had enough, and threw their hands up and said it was never going to get better under Dan Snyder. Then they saw the light at the end of the tunnel with the sale, and it’s a fan base that has been ready for two decades to support a winner and root for a team this area used embrace.”
“They’ve been desperate for 10 years, maybe longer, but they’re just rejuvenated,” Bish added. “They may feel they need something more at quarterback once the season starts, but right now, a lot of people are in Sam Howell’s camp – we’ll see. They have to go out and prove it now, but can you imagine what this fan vase will be like if they go out and dominate the Cardinals Week 1?
Of course, the Cards are expected to stink, ‘the lowest of the low-hanging fruit’ says Cakes, but it’s still a game on the schedule as long as it’s not “a fall on your face moment.”
“If it’s a sell-out or close to it, it’s going to be all Commanders fans, for the first time in a long time,” Cakes said. “If there’s ever a time for the Commanders to represent and sell out for their fan base, it’s Week 1.”
Take a listen to Cakes, JP, and Bish’s entire discussion on the return of fans, along with some of your calls on folks flocking back to the Commanders, above!
