When others zig, Chris Simms zags, and he did just that in his latest rankings of wide receiver prospects in the NFL Draft – dropping Marvin Harrison Jr., most experts’ pick as the top WR in the draft, down to third in his list behind LSU’s Malik Nabors and Brian Thomas Jr.?
It’s not likely Washington is looking receiver until at least the second round, so it’s not a concern here, but that’s certainly a choice.
“He probably doesn't have the all-out speed as those guys, but man, he’s 6-foot-4 with great hands, and had a lot of big plays – I think the last two years he had 28 touchdowns,” Bish said. “Who knows how good he's gonna be, I think he's gonna be really good depending on what offense he's in, but these other guys are gonna be studs too.”
JP noted how Simms’ WR rankings have been pretty spot on, especially with Justin Jefferson as Drab pointed out – but he doesn’t always have to be right.
“Every time I watched Harrison though, he can catch anything and he's always making big plays,” Bish said. “I don't know what his 40 speed is, but it seemed like he was separating himself from defenses.”
And then Cakes had his WR epiphany.
“I’ll say this, I was talking about this with EB during the break - I think if Brian Thomas Jr. somehow lasts into the mid-twenties, I think that's when Adam Peters is gonna be on the phone for a trade up back into the first round to potentially pick him and pair him with Terry McLaurin and Jahan Dotson,” Cakes replied.
That led JP to think they might not have to trade up to get a stud receiver because the class is so deep, a good one should be there at 36 or 40 – and he pointed to 2020 when Jefferson was the fifth one taken, and both Tee Higgins and Michael Pittman Jr. were second-rounders.
“Can Washington really afford to trade up the draft for a wide receiver? Because now you're you're shirking the tackle again,” JP said.
“I'm not saying that that it's a must, but I'm just saying that if a guy as talented as that falls and the price isn't that high, I just think that he would be tempted by it,” Cakes said. “Then you pick your best tackle at 40 if that's your move, and you have to part with the No. 36 pick and whatever else to move up like eight or 10 spots.”
