JUNKIES: Will the Commanders retain Eric Bieniemy in some fashion come Monday?

Ron Rivera’s run in DC is almost surely ending come Monday – but will Eric Bieniemy be the baby tossed out with the bathwater?

According to a report from Josina Anderson, and repurposed by Commanders Wire, EB could be a top candidate for the Chargers’ head coaching vacancy, which may make all of it moot – but on a list that includes Jim Harbaugh, Dan Quinn, and other big names, the question is wondering if he’s really high on that list?

Cakes and Bish, running a two-man show Wednesday, wondered if Bieniemy had shown enough to stay here, whether as the OC or head coach, and if he’s proven enough to merit consideration for the latter?

“I would be very surprised. Usually when the head coach is fired, the entire staff goes, but who knows in the world's most unpredictable place?” Bish said.

Going down the list, the guys came up with ‘six to eight’ teams – San Diego, Las Vegas, and Carolina for sure, DC most likely, and then maybe the Bears, Patriots, and a surprise or two – that will be hunting for a coach this year, and if Harbaugh stays in college and Belichick stays in New England…

“If New England does let go of Belichick, there are rumors Mike Vrabel would take over, so that would open Tennessee,” Bish said, “and if the Commanders want EB and let Rivera go, that would b an instant move. But I'm just wondering if Commanders fans want to see Josh Harris retain Bieniemy.”

“I just want to see what he can do with a more stable quarterback, a guy who has some more experience under his belt,” Cakes said. “I want to know what that sort of offense looks like, how it operates. Does it operate the way we've seen in flashes with Jacoby Brissett? If that’s the case, then I’m interested, but if it looks like the Sam Howell version of the offense, especially in the second half of the season, I don't know that I'm that interested.”

Cakes still thinks he’ll gain interest, although ‘hot commodity’ is a stretch, but he’ll be in the mix, even if the Chargers – where he played, and where he has an established QB – might be the best fit.

Drab, however, thinks EB will be here a while even if Ron and a good chunk of the staff gets fired, to give Josh Harris time to ‘figure things out’ in terms of Eric’s future – and you can take a listen to the whole discussion above!
