Former Washington great Mark Rypien joined The Sports Junkies on Friday to share his excitement, and relief, that the turmoil of Dan Snyder’s tenure as owner is behind the franchise, and Josh Harris and company have arrived to bring a new identity to the franchise.
“We’re trending in the right direction,” Rypien said. “Maybe all this hoopla and turmoil can be put to rest…knowing Josh Harris and his team that he’s put together is going to come in with all barrels firing and ready to go. He’s been successful. He’s done it at the NHL level and the NBA level. He’s a guy that’s very confident about bringing a team together.”
Rypien also hopes that the new ownership group will bring new expectations to the team and the fanbase, where the belief every season will be that the group is in contention for a playoff spot.
“Get this club heading into a direction where anything less than going to the playoffs is unacceptable,” Rypien said.
Still, while the change was absolutely necessary, Rypien doesn’t hold any ill will towards Snyder, though the vast majority of Commanders fans won’t share in that sentiment.
“I personally don’t have any grudges or anything against Mr. Snyder,” Rypien said. “It just didn’t work in Washington, but now we’re in a situation where I think our football team is headed in the right direction. There isn’t all this drama going on…I think this is probably the best thing for everyone.”
