The Patriots have made their first move of 2024 free agency and it's at the expense of the Commanders: according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, New England is signing former Washington running back Antonio Gibson.
Gibson was drafted by Washington in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Memphis. After starting 10 games as a rookie and 16 in his second season (where he notched 1,037 yards rushing) Gibson began to be phased out of the offense in favor of Brian Robinson, and became the third down/receiving back in 2023 following JD McKissic's departure.
Last season, Gibby played in 16 games but had just 65 carries for 265 yards and a TD, and he had 48 catches on 59 targets for 389 yards and two scores.
He now joins a running back room with Rhamondre Stevenson, Ja'Mycal Hasty, and Kevin Harris in Foxborough, bringing a much-needed element in the passing game for whomever New England deploys at QB. Gibson was a receiver at Memphis, and has caught 172 passes for 1,282 yards and seven touchdowns over the last four seasons.
