Ron Rivera: 'Important' for Commanders to add a running back this offseason

Commanders running backs Brian Robinson Jr. and Antonio Gibson paired up to show some promising potential down the stretch of last season, but head coach Ron Rivera made it clear that running back is a position where the team is looking to add this offseason.

“Adding to it is important for us,” Rivera said at the NFL owner’s meetings this week. “We’ve got a couple of guys that we like that are going to compete as well. But we will most certainly look for another guy to come in and be a multi-purpose guy. And do we have that guy in the roster? Maybe. Is there a guy out there in free agency? Potentially. And could you draft one, possibly?”

Robinson and Gibson were the team’s top two rushers last season, while Jonathan Williams saw some touches in front of J.D. McKissic, who is no longer in the fold after playing in just eight games last season.

Washington could look to add a starting running back in the draft, which may be the route the team takes given the limited options available on the free agent. But it clearly is a point of emphasis for the Commanders to bring in a new back for new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy.
