How close is Amazon founder and one of the world's richest people, Jeff Bezos, from entering the fray and making a bid to buy the Washington Commanders from Daniel Snyder? And is he even interested in buying them?
"So I think he is definitely interested and is continuing to kick the tires," Teddy Schleifer, a reporter who covers Silicon Valley billionaires and writes for Puck.com, told The Team 980's Kevin Sheehan.
While Bezos hasn't entered a bid like the Josh Harris group or Steve Apostolopoulos, Schleifer reported that he has done several things that indicate definite interest in bidding for the Washington franchise like signing an NDA so as to not publicly discuss the process and hiring Allen & Company to more formally kick the tires.
Bezos has been waging a much quieter campaign than the Harris group – which featured Magic Johnson on the Today Show – and Schleifer told Sheehan that while not saying it is close, it is "definitely possible" this process ends with Amazon founder owning the Commanders.
Schleifer talked about both Bezos and Snyder keeping their "optionality" open and that the two have even "had a personal conversation" late last year about these things.
But how close are we to a deal? "I do not think we are close," Schleifer told Sheehan. "I think if Dan wanted to sell to Josh Harris for $6 billion, like, this woulda happened a couple weeks ago. It seems like it's being slow played, doesn't it?"
Schleifer said it seems like the pressure on the current Commanders owner seems to be down and that it is "certainly conspicuous" the Harris group's bid has not been accepted or moving any faster. "My bet is there are a few more scenes to go in this movie," he said.
And, there could be a league-wide stumbling block for the man whose name is synonymous with Amazon buying a NFL team. The full interview can be heard above including Schleifer's take on what kind of owner Bezos would be if he buys the Commanders and a prediction about who ends up buying the team, when, and for how much.
