Legendary Washington Redskins defensive tackle Dave Butz is dead at 72, 106.7 The Fan has learned.
At 6-foot-8, 295 pounds, the defensive tackle was a beast of a man. 106.7 The Fan learned that Butz had recently been moved into hospice care.
Butz was born in Alabama and attended college at Purdue before being selected as a first-round pick (5th overall) by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1973. After two seasons with the Cardinals, Butz was acquired via trade from then-Redskins head coach George Allen, who gave up two first-round picks and a second-rounder to the Cardinals in the deal.
Butz played for the Redskins from 1975 to 1988, winning two Super Bowls — when Washington defeated Miami 27-17 in Super Bowl XVII, and when Washington defeated Denver 42-10 in Super Bowl XXII.
Butz was elected to one Pro Bowl (1983) and named a First-Team All Pro that same year. He is a member of the NFL's 1980s All-Decade Team and was honored as one of the 80 Greatest Redskins. He is also a member of Washington's Ring of Fame.
