When the sale of the Commanders becomes official on Thursday, Grant says it will be his greatest off-the-field moment of his lifetime as a DC sports fan.
What would be the other candidates? Grant listed his top five, with the official end of Dan Snyder’s tenure as Commanders owner holding strong at No. 1, even if it hasn’t happened yet.
“Number one favorite day I’ve had as a sports fan in this town, non on-field accomplishments, will be Thursday with the Dan Snyder sale,” Grant said.
Here are the rest:
“Number two, it would be the announcement that MLB is moving the Expos from Montreal to DC because of the joy the Nats bring me, and how much energy and effort I exert into that team, but at the time, I was just an Orioles fan and was like ‘Oh, that’s cool, DC will have a baseball team.’ So, number two is gonna be Joe Gibbs coming back, because as a young fan, he was a fake person. He was the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus…he was a guy I learned about as if I’m sitting in church and they’re saying ‘Trust us, he’s gonna come and fix the organization.
“I would put the Griffin trade three…Robert Griffin on draft night was wearing a beautiful blue suit…he had ‘Go get your dream’ socks. I remember that became a big story that night. I was there. I was at the draft…2012 was a lot of fun.
“Fourth, I’d put the John Wall lottery win, because at the time, my apathy for the Wizards hadn’t set in yet. I still believed the Wizards could bring me happiness.”
“Fifth would be [the Capitals] winning the lottery for [Ovechkin] or the Expos moving to DC.”
