The national media is clowning Ron Rivera for saying that he wasn’t aware of what Sam Howell could do, a topic the Junkies discussed at length on Wednesday’s show.
They also asked CBS Sports’ Will Brinson, who is based in the Carolinas, about whether or not Ron was just as obliviously loquacious with the Panthers, and, well, the answer is yes, but now it’s worse.
“I think the difference is that in Carolina, there’s a smaller media contingent, so unless you said something outrageously inflammatory, it wouldn’t rise – but there were several missteps there, too,” Brinson said. “But he knows what happened with the ownership change in Carolina, so that maybe dictates a lot of what Ron says right now – maybe he’s pressing a little bit, and that’s part of what’s going on here. I know the Bieniemy stuff got a lot of peoples’ attention, and once you do that around a team that’s being watched heavily, Ron is doing himself no favor drawing attention to himself from a quote perspective.”
Brinson also had a laugh with the Junks about Jonathan Gannon saying he wasn’t going to name a Week 1 starter yet ‘for competitive reasons’ after the Cardinals cut Colt McCoy.
“Competing for what, the No. 1 pick?” Brinson joked. “You talk about an absolute must-win game for Ron Rivera…you cannot lose to a Cardinals team that is not going to tell you who they’re starting between Josh Dobbs and Clayton Tune for competitive reasons. You lose to this Cardinals team…this team is really bad, and I’d be stunned if they didn’t end up with the No. 1 pick. If you lose to that team, you can’t be mad if you get fired. If your defense can’t slow those two down, don’t even get fired, just tender your resignation!”
