Washington waives RB Bryce Love

The Bryce Love experiment is over in Washington before it ever officially began.

The 23-year-old back was released by the Washington Football Team on Monday, ending what began as a promising future in Washington when he was selected in the fourth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Love amassed 4,330 yards from scrimmage and 32 touchdowns in four seasons at Stanford.

Love entered the NFL as a longshot to play during his rookie season after suffering a torn ACL in his final collegiate game. But with adequate time to recover, the thought went, Love would be able to bounce back 100 percent healthy in time for the 2020 season.

Bringing him along slowly in 2020, Love's surgically repaired knee flared up once he returned to practice in October. Washington placed Love on Injured Reserve, optimistic that he could return before the end of the regular season. He was designated for return from the IR in November, but was never elevated to the active roster.

Between drafting Love in '19 and Derrius Guice, a second round pick, in 2018, Washington had hoped to find some sort of lasting answer at running back. They did end up finding a star in 2020, selecting Antonio Gibson in the third round (66th overall) out of Memphis. Gibson rushed for 795 yards and 11 touchdowns in his rookie season.

Guice missed his entire rookie season with a torn ACL and would appear in only five games in 2019 before being sidelined again with a sprained MCL. He was released in Aug. 2020 after an arrest for domestic violence.
