Taylor Heinicke signs two-year contract extension with Washington Football Team

The Washington Football Team has agreed to terms on a two-year contract extension with quarterback Taylor Heinicke, the team announced on Wednesday.

First reported by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Heinicke's contract is valued at $8.75 million and includes incentives based on the number of games he starts, Rapoport details.

Washington will likely still be in the market for a quarterback this offseason, Rapoport goes on to note, but Heinicke's deal ensures at least someone will be in Washington's quarterback room in training camp. Kyle Allen is an exclusive rights free agent and it's currently unclear if he will re-sign with Washington.

Alex Smith, who will be 37 next season, is still under contract for two more seasons but is currently weighing if he wants to return for his 16th NFL season.

For fans hoping Heinicke would at least get a shot to compete for the starting job in 2021, he appears to have it. Heinicke performed brilliantly in Washington's playoff game against the Buccaneers, proving he can compete at the highest level against the eventual Super Bowl champion Bucs.
