Washington Snap Count vs. Rams: QB carousel highlights WFT's worst game

Washington played their worst game of the season Sunday.

In the rain at FedEx Field, Washington managed just 108 yards (2.1 yards per play) and got 10 first downs in a 30-10 defeat to fall to 1-4 on the season. They went 2-for-13 on 3rd down, 0-1 on 4th down. Tress Way punted 10 times for 511 yards.

Think about it: Tress Way punted for 403 yards more than the Washington Football Team gained on offense.

It was not a good day for Scott Turner’s unit and they need serious help no matter if it is Alex Smith or Kyle Allen or Dwayne Haskins at quarterback.

Unfortunately, for head coach Ron Rivera, Jack Del Rio’s defense did not fare any better: The visiting Los Angeles Rams put up 429 yards of total offense, scored 30 times, had 20 first downs, went 6-for-15 on 3rd downs, and allowed 9.7 yards per pass attempt in the rain.

It was a disaster. Here are the snap counts to see who was out there when it all went wrong during Week 5:

Offense: 54 total plays
Quarterback and Offensive Line:
Alex Smith - 29 (54%)
Kyle Allen - 26 (46%)
Geron Christian Sr. - 54 (100%)
Wes Schweitzer - 54 (100%)
Wes Martin - 54 (100%)
Chase Roullier - 54 (100%)
Morgan Moses - 54 (100%)

Dwayne Haskins had taken 100 percent of Washington’s snaps at quarterback through the first four weeks of the season, but he was benched (and not at FedEx Field Sunday due to illness) and so, of course, Washington used two QBs in Week 5. This offensive line had their worst day of the season: allowing eight total sacks (including six of Alex Smith) and generating no push on run plays. Wes Martin got his lunch eaten by the Rams’ Aaron Donald.

Running Backs:
Antonio Gibson - 30 (56%)
J.D. McKissic - 27 (50%)
Peyton Barber - 2 (4%)

Washington has decided to make Gibson the feature back and, outside of WR Terry McLaurin, he looks like the lone player on offense with some sparkle. But he couldn’t get anything going on the ground (27 yards on 11 carries). McKissic led the team in receiving with 46 yards on six receptions.

Wide Receivers:
Terry McLaurin - 54 (100%)
Isaiah Wright - 42 (78%)
Dontrelle Inman - 31 (57%)
Antonio Gandy-Golden - 23 (43%)

Very hard to judge this unit on Sunday. Washington played two quarterbacks (one of whom had not played in nearly two years) and the game was played during a driving rainstorm. Of course, that didn’t stop the Rams’ Jared Goff from throwing for 309 yards. But, again, Washington used two different quarterbacks and the offensive line playing as poorly as they did. Having said that: Wright, Inman, and Gandy-Golden combined for two catches for one total yard. McLaurin had 26 yards on three catches, despite being targeted seven times.

Tight Ends:
Logan Thomas - 47 (87%)
Jeremy Sprinkle - 9 (17%)
Temarrick Hemingway - 5 (9%)

This unit continues to underperform and there’s not much Washington can do about it until the offseason. Thomas had just a single catch for four yards, Sprinkle dropped his only time targeted, but, Hemingway (just activated) hauled ina 10-yard catch. Marcus Baugh was inactive.

Defense: 68 total plays
Defensive Line:
DaRon Payne - 59 (87%)
Jon Allen - 53 (78%)
Chase Young - 45 (66%)
Montez Sweat - 44 (65%)
Ryan Kerrigan - 21 (31%)
Tim Settle - 21 (31%)
Ryan Anderson - 17 (25%)
Nate Orchard - 7 (10%)
James Smith-Williams - 5 (7%)

This unit got exposed. There are five 1st round draft picks here. The Washington Football Team has invested so much in this unit and they were nonfactors. Sweat had the only sack and combined for 1.5 tackles for loss, but that was it.

Linebackers:
Jon Bostic - 68 (100%)
Kevin Pierre-Louis - 52 (76%)
Thomas Davis Sr. - 33 (49%)

The Rams ran for 129 yards on 35 carries. Bostic and Pierre-Louis combined for 10 tackles. Davis Sr. had no tackles on his 33 plays, but one pass deflection. After playing nearly a third of the defensive snaps a week ago, Shawn Dion Hamilton did not feature for Del Rio’s defense.

Secondary:
S Landon Collins - 68 (100%)
CB Kendall Fuller - 68 (100%)
CB Ronald Darby - 68 (98%)
S Troy Apke - 47 (69%)
S Kamren Curl - 36 (53%)
S Deshazor Everett - 21 (31%)
CB Jimmy Moreland - 15 (22%)

Washington fans may have noticed there was a change at safety during the game: Everett saw a significant increase in playing time and came in for several plays in place of Apke, who had played nearly every snap through the first four games. Fuller’s return from injury has been a big boost for Washington, he had another interception Sunday. Fabian Moreau did not feature for the third-straight week.
