The Washington Football Team earned a win over the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. There were no style points for the ho-hum 20-9 win, it was a workman-like performance.
Washington was helped when the visitor’s stud rookie quarterback Joe Burrow was felled by an awkward collision in the pocket and suffered what is reportedly a torn ACL. The game changed from that moment, but there were plenty of good plays in the first half that were deserving of praise.
Both of those players were on the defense: pass rusher Chase Young had a fine game and corner Ronald Darby had four pass breakups, including three on potential touchdowns.
Offensive coordinator Scott Turner had a makeshift offensive line and they held up nicely. But defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio’s search for consistency at the linebacker is will continue for another week.
Here is who played and who didn’t for the Washington Football Team in Week 11:
Offense: 62 total plays
Quarterback and Offensive Line:
Alex Smith - 62 (100%)
Morgan Moses - 62 (100%)
Chase Roullier - 62 (100%)
Brandon Scherff - 62 (100%)
Wes Schweitzer - 62 (100%)
David Sharpe - 62 (100%)
Wes Martin - 3 (5%)
With Cornelius Lucas inactive and Geron Christian on the Injured Reserve list, Washington went with right tackle Morgan Moses at left tackle and David Sharpe at right tackle. And this unit did quite well. The pass protection was good enough for Alex Smith to throw for 166 yards (earning his first win in 742 days) and they were plenty of holes to get 164 yards rushing. Brandon Scherff got a special shoutout from head coach Ron Rivera.
Running Backs:
Antonio Gibson - 33 (53%)
J.D. McKissic - 32 (52%)
Peyton Barber - 14 (23%)
Antonio Gibson continues to prove to be a quality player rushing for 94 yards on 16 attempts and a touchdown. J.D. McKissic had 43 yards on six carries, including a 14-yard scamper on a jet motion play. All three backs had carries of 10 yards or longer.
Wide Receivers:
Terry McLaurin - 57 (92%)
Cam Sims - 52 (84%)
Steven Sims - 20 (32%)
Isaiah Wright - 16 (26%)
Robert Foster - 5 (8%)
The big play of the day came on Terry McLaurin making a fantastic play on a 42-yard catch in the first half on a nicely thrown deep pass by Alex Smith. But no other receiver managed more than 30 yards on the day. Cam Sims had 20 yards on two catches, Steven Sims had 13 yards on three catches (4.3 average is... woof).
Tight Ends:
Logan Thomas - 56 (90%)
Jeremy Sprinkle - 12 (19%)
Temarrick Hemingway - 10 (16%)
The less said about this unit in the passing game the better - even Logan Thomas was held quiet and had a drop. But the higher snap counts for all three show Washington was committed to some more heavy sets and running the ball which these guys contributed to well. Play of the day candidate: Thomas’ QB-sneak!
Defense: 68 total plays
Defensive Line:
Daron Payne - 62 (91%)
Jon Allen - 51 (75%)
Chase Young - 53 (78%)
Montez Sweat - 44 (65%)
Ryan Kerrigan - 27 (40%)
Tim Settle - 25 (37%)
James Smith-Williams - 15 (22%)
Casey Toohill - 5 (7%)
Chase Young had another big game overcoming some doubters. Young made the play of the game and clearly looks like one of the most fearsome players on the field. With Ryan Anderson out there was more time for Ryan Kerrigan who, what do you know, had another sack and three tackles. Tim Settle got another sack late, he has four on the year.
Linebackers:
Cole Holcomb - 43 (63%)
Kevin Pierre-Louis - 36 (53%)
Jon Bostic - 36 (53%)
Thomas Davis Sr. - 19 (28%)
Shaun Dion Hamilton - 1 (1%)
Washington went to a ‘Linebacker-by-committee’ approach Sunday. Jon Bostic, who was a sort of an ironman for Washington playing every snap this season on defense (except for the ones he missed due to an ejection), but Sunday he played only half the snaps. He still had three tackles including one for a loss. Thomas Davis played for the first time in a few weeks and looked very old out when Finley scampered past him for a first down run. Kevin Pierre-Louis had six tackles, including one for a loss. Cole Holcomb had just two.
Secondary:
S Kamren Curl - 68 (100%)
S Troy Apke - 68 (100%)
CB Kendall Fuller - 67 (99%)
CB Ronald Darby - 63 (93%)
CB Jimmy Moreland - 54 (79%)
CB Fabian Moreau - 11 (16%)
Holy mackerel was Ronald Darby good on Sunday! Had two exceptional pass deflections on deep plays in the end zone in the first half, and another on the goal line in which he might have done better to nab the interception. He also recovered the fumble on the Chase Young hit. The secondary gave up a lot of yards underneath but did well to make sure backup Ryan Finley looked terrible and seal the win. Without Deshazor Everett, Troy Apke did decently, but he did drop an interception that was thrown directly to him. Kendall Fuller was back to his normal self and played decently. Kamren Curl led the team with nine tackles. Fabian Moreau had a late interception.
