Chris “Mad Dog” Russo has been on a crusade against Steph Curry lately. The popular radio and outspoken radio host from New York joined 95.7 The Game’s “The Morning Roast” Tuesday and made waves on social media with his Curry comments.
Mad Dog joined the show to discuss the MLB lockout, but couldn’t bite his tongue. Before hosts Bonta Hill and Joe Shasky could even ask Mad Dog a question, he went on the offensive against Curry and discounted his three championships so far. You can listen to the full interview below:
“This is going to annoy you guys out of the gate, but I’ll say it,” Mad Dog said. “Win a championship this year without [Kevin] Durant. The one you won, Kyrie [Irving] and [Kevin] Love didn’t play. You almost blew it, [Andre] Iguodala was the MVP. Go out there this year, without Durant and win a title. Let me see him do that.”
Coming in hot.
Steph might have led the Warriors to the 2015 championship before KD joined and the Warriors went back to back, but Mad Dog isn’t impressed. As he noted, Iguodala won the Finals MVP that year, but there’s not much evidence that Steph “almost blew it.” The Warriors won the last three games of the 2015 Finals to claim a 4-2 series win against LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Curry averaged 26 points, 6.3 assists, 5.2 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game and scored 37 points in a series-swaying Game 5, when he knocked down seven 3-pointers in the process.
Of course, Mad Dog had to jab Curry a bit for losing the 2016 Finals to the Cavs.
“Go out there and win the title,” Mad Dog said. “He got outplayed by Kyrie the year they lost the 3-1 lead. Go out there and win a championship. No Durant. Durant’s on the other team and Durant was by far their best player. Go do that.”
That was just the beginning for Mad Dog’s hot takes on Curry this week. On Wednesday, he was trending on Twitter for this hilarious and animated exchange with Stephen A. Smith on ESPN's First Take. Once again, Curry was the topic du jour for Mad Dog, as he debated with Stephen A. whether or not Steph was a Top 10 player of all-time.
Mad Dog, obviously, thought Curry belonged outside of the exclusive club. It’s hard to transcribe the hilarious exchange between the two over-the-top TV hosts, but this was a key bit from Mad Dog:
“Your life’s on the line! Do you want Magic [Johnson] or you want Curry?!” Mad Dog said. “Don’t tell me Curry, you know you’re wrong! You want Kareem [Abdul-Jabbar] or you want Curry?! You want [Bill] Russell or you want Curry?! Ah, come on! He won 11 championships in 13 years!”
At this point it’s difficult to discern what’s truth and what’s theater, but the whole back-and-forth was pretty hilarious. That’s a dynamic TV duo if I’ve ever seen one. The two dudes couldn’t even keep straight faces as they berated each other on the air. Eventually Mad Dog’s earpiece fell out and they just kept yelling at each other.
During the recent All-Star break in Cleveland, Curry said he eventually just wants to be in the conversation for top five players of all-time. Curry is definitely in the conversation for Mad Dog.
