Austin Ekeler on Justin Herbert's injury: 'I know as much as the public does'

Austin Ekeler knows as much about Justin Herbert’s health as the rest of us.

The Los Angeles Chargers quarterback is dealing with a rib injury after taking a series of shots late in their Thursday Night Football loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Herbert reportedly was throwing passes at the Chargers’ facility Tuesday and looking himself as they prepare for their Week 3 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars, which is a promising sign.

During his appearance on CBS Sports Radio’s “Maggie & Perloff”, Ekeler was asked about Herbert’s health – specifically if fantasy owners should start Herbert this weekend.

“That’s a great question. We don’t even know as players," Ekeler said. "Sure, we go week-to-week, or day-to-day, but we don’t know the full diagnosis of what he’s feeling. Even if I did, I (won’t be) out here spewing it all around. I’m not the insider that people are going to go to. Right now, I know as much as the public does because whatever the public knows is what’s been talked about in our locker room. So right now, we’re just kind of seeing what happens.

“Obviously, he’s going to be in pain, he’s got some cracked ribs, anyone with cracked ribs is going to be in pain. Is he going to be able to participate in an NFL game? We’ll see. We know from history – even I myself have played with cracked ribs, so it can be done – and he showed his toughness in that Kansas City Thursday Night game. So if he does plays, I wouldn’t be surprised. If he doesn’t, I also wouldn’t be surprised.”

If Herbert misses any time, it likely will be veteran backup Chase Daniel who gets the start, although Easton Stick also is an option.
