LAKE FOREST, Ill. (670 The Score) -- The Bears have traded away two of their team captains this season, placed two others on injured reserve and dealt with a revolving door of roster movement in this rebuilding campaign. Through those challenges, second-year quarterback Justin Fields has led the team.
Coach Matt Eberflus pointed that out Monday, explaining that the 23-year-old Fields has the respect of the entire team and a relationship with more than just those on offense. To Eberflus, that's an important trait for a player whom he sees becoming a franchise quarterback. Fields is "coming across the aisle" as a leader for the Bears in all three phases, Eberflus said.
"Of course, he is leading our offense," Eberflus said. "But he's leading our football team too. That goes for everybody. You know we want to build a Chicago Bear football team. We don't want to have offense, defense, kicking, and he's done a really good job of that of bringing everyone together."
Fields was voted a captain prior to the regular season, an honor bestowed upon him by his Bears teammates.
The No. 11 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Fields has completed 62% of his passes for 2,048 yards, 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 13 games this season while adding 143 carries for 1,000 yards and eight scores on the ground.
The Bears (3-11) host the Bills (11-3) on Saturday at Soldier Field.
