(670 The Score) The Cubs have continued to infuse their roster with youth from Triple-A Iowa.
Chicago has recalled infielder/outfielder Christopher Morel from Triple-A, the club announced Monday. He'll be available when the Cubs host the Cardinals on Monday evening at Wrigley Field. The Cubs optioned outfielder Nelson Velazquez back to Triple-A in a corresponding move.
Morel, 23, was on a tear at Triple-A, hitting .330 with 11 homers, 31 RBIs and a 1.155 OPS in 29 games. In 2022, Morel hit .235 with 16 homers, 47 RBIs and a .741 OPS in 113 games for the Cubs.
Many expected that Morel would make the Opening Day roster for the Cubs this season, but the front office wanted him to get at-bats on a daily basis and thus sent him to Iowa to open the campaign. There still isn't one set position open now for Morel as the Cubs are healthy, but his versatility should help him get playing time, as he can play the outfield, second base and third base.
Last Friday, the Cubs promoted highly regarded first base prospect Matt Mervis from Triple-A. He's 4-of-14 with two RBIs in his first three games with Chicago.
