(104.3 The Score) The Cubs continued to strengthen their pitching staff Monday by acquiring right-hander Clay Holmes from the Mets about an hour before the trade deadline.
Chicago also received outfielder Tyrone Taylor in a deal in which Cubs infielder prospect Jefferson Rojas will be sent to the Mets, according to reports.
Holmes, 33, projects to fit somewhere near the top of the Cubs’ rotation. He posted a 2.39 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in nine starts for the Mets earlier this season before suffering a fractured fibula on a comebacker to the mound. That has sidelined him from big league action since May 15, but he’s now ready to return after a recent rehab stint.
Holmes has a career 3.53 ERA in nine MLB seasons. He has a $12-million player option for the 2027 season that he’s likely to decline.
Taylor, 32, was hitting .241 with 10 homers, 28 RBIs and a .794 OPS in 67 games for the Mets this season.
The 21-year-old Rojas was ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the Cubs’ organization and 63rd-best prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline. He was hitting .270 with 15 homers, 57 RBIs and a .799 OPS in 91 games at Double-A this season.
