(670 The Score) Another team has entered the trade sweepstakes for Cubs infielder/outfielder Kris Bryant.
The reigning American League champion Rays have had preliminary discussions with the Cubs about Bryant, Jeff Passan of ESPN reported Tuesday. The Phillies and Mets are two other suitors for Bryant, according to previous reports.
The Rays entering the mix is interesting considering they had the top-ranked farm system entering the 2021 season, according to MLB.com. Some of that talent has ascended to the big leagues and is considered untouchable, but Tampa Bay still boasts a deep system with prospects who figure to interest Chicago.
The expectation across MLB is that Bryant will be moved before the trade deadline Friday afternoon. He has spent his entire seven-year MLB career with the Cubs, winning the 2016 National League MVP award and earning All-Star honors four times.
Bryant, 29, is hitting .269 with 17 homers, 50 RBIs and an .856 OPS in 91 games this season. In addition to his bat, his defensive versatility – he can play third base, any outfield position and fill in at first base as well – is appealing to many teams.
