(670 The Score) As expected, three-time All-Star catcher Willson Contreras has decided to decline the $19.65-million qualifying offer from the Cubs, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported Tuesday afternoon.
The decision means that Contreras will enter free agency, where he's widely expected to leave for a new team. Because they extended the qualifying offer, the Cubs will receive draft compensation if he does.
Contreras, 30, has been a cornerstone piece for the Cubs since making his big league debut in 2016, when he was a member of their championship team. He was an All-Star in 2018, 2019 and this past season, when he hit .243 with 22 homers, 55 RBIs and an .815 OPS in 113 games.
