(670 The Score) White Sox manager Tony La Russa will be at Guaranteed Rate Field on Tuesday and Wednesday but won't be managing or in uniform, general manager Rick Hahn said.
La Russa has been on a medical leave of absence since Aug. 30 due to heart issues. He'll watch the White Sox's two-game home series against the Rockies from a suite at the ballpark. It remains unclear if the 77-year-old La Russa will return to managing this season as 21 games remain in the regular season.
"As for if and when that may occur, we simply don't have that information at this point," Hahn said. "In the end, we're going to understandably follow the advice of medical experts on this."
After facing Colorado twice, Chicago then travels to Cleveland for a key matchup Thursday, as the Guardians lead the White Sox by three games in the AL Central entering play Tuesday. Under the direction of acting manager Miguel Cairo, the White Sox are 9-4 in La Russa's absence.
"The team obviously has been playing very well and for an extended period now, in our opinion, playing up to its potential," Hahn said. "You've seen a great deal of energy. You've seen a great deal of fight. You've seen some of that swagger that we talked about in the past. But most importantly, they're playing good baseball and as I said, playing as a team and fulfilling a lot of that potential that many saw in this club. Miggy obviously deserves a great deal of credit, but I'd be remiss if I didn't also point out the effort of the other coaches there. I think the communication between the coaches has been outstanding. The communication between the front office and the coaches has been very strong. And the players have stepped up and taken responsibility and put forth an effort to fill the void left by Tony's absence. It's really been enjoyable to watch not simply because of the results on the field, which have been great, but also because of the unity and commonness of purpose that we've seen and the intent and the energy that we've seen from players and coaches alike."
