(670 The Score) White Sox catcher Yasmani Grandal is likely to be out longer than initially expected with his left knee injury.
Grandal on Wednesday had surgery to repair the torn tendon in his left knee, the team announced. The course of action came after further evaluation and one day after the White Sox had estimated that Grandal would miss the next four to six weeks. The procedure was performed by Dr. Nikhil Verma of Midwest Ortho. at Rush, while Dr. Shane Nho assisted.
At this time, there's no exact recovery timeline for Grandal, though doctors still expect him to return to action this season, the White Sox said.
Grandal suffered the injury in the sixth inning of the team's 8-5 loss to the Twins on Monday evening. He went down to the ground after checking his swing, and he writhed on the field in pain. Grandal was helped off the field without putting weight on his left side, but he later did walk under his own power in the dugout.
Grandal is hitting .188 with 14 homers, 38 RBIs and an .824 OPS in 63 games this season. Zack Collins will be the primary catcher while Grandal is out, and the White Sox also recalled 27-year-old catcher Seby Zavala from Triple-A.
