White Sox rookie Yermín Mercedes earns American League Player of the Week honors

(670 The Score) White Sox rookie designated hitter Yermín Mercedes on Monday was named the American League Player of the Week after a scorching start to the season.

Mercedes went 9-of-14 (.643) with two doubles, a homer, six RBIs and two runs with a 1.643 OPS in three games in the White Sox's opening series against the Angels. As part of that stretch, Mercedes started the season with eight straight hits, which made history as he became the first player in the modern era (since 1900) to accomplish that feat.


Mercedes went 5-for-5 with a double and four RBIs in Chicago's win Friday and then homered while recording three hits Saturday.

The White Sox visit the Mariners on Monday night to open a three-game series.
