(RADIO.COM Sports) In a weird, wild 2020 NFL season fraught with anxiety and unease due to the worldwide pandemic, it was nice to see one moment of pure, unadulterated fun on wild-card weekend.
Saints coach Sean Payton kept his promise and was doused in Nickelodeon's trademark green slime following his team's victory against the Chicago Bears on Sunday. The whole broadcast was fun, and though it may not have been the best example of solid football analysis — Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky won the "NVP" award after a pretty meager performance — it was generally received well by the football world.
Payton also gave us an inside look at what the slime's consistency was like.

But while Payton shared the consistency of slime, he didn't divulge any secrets about the taste. That's where White Sox ace Lucas Giolito came to the rescue, sharing what he's heard about the taste of the mysterious green substance on Reddit during an "Ask Me Anything" session.
When Redditor sandman730 asked Giolito if he thought MLB should host games on Nickelodeon in a similar manner to what we saw from the NFL and if he'd like to get slimed, Giolito was ready with a response.
"I think that would be amazing and I'd absolutely be in line to get slimed," Giolito wrote. "I hear it tastes like chicken."
Chicken? Really? Another Redditor commented underneath and called BS on Giolito, saying that he's been slimed before and that it was more like Play-Doh — which, by the way, was something I ate in way-too-large portions as a kid and tasted great.
Some more digging unearths that slime may not have a flavor at all. Krista Torres of Buzzfeed heard from Jay Schmalholz, the executive producer of the "Kids' Choice Sports Awards," that slime doesn't taste like anything but is edible. After diving into the tub of slime herself, Torres confirmed that it tastes and smells like nothing.
This was back in 2018, so it's possible that the slime recipe has changed. It's also possible that Giolito was mistakenly thinking of Nickelodeon's slime sauce, which is sold at Walmart and tastes like "a watery, but pretty delicious ketchup," according to Kate Holland of Today).
Perhaps Giolito will find out for himself if Nickelodeon takes their sports simulcasting from the gridiron to the baseball diamond. And with performances like his 2020 no-hitter, a huge bucket of slime could easily be coming his way.
