November tropical ‘event’ possible next week

Tropical system developing into Sara
NOAA-NHC

Tropical Depression Nineteen in the Caribbean Sea will likely form into Tropical Storm Sara, and strike Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula. But forecasters at the National Hurricane Center are highly uncertain of the storm’s track after this weekend.

The system will cause significant, life-threatening flash flooding and mudslides in Honduras, Belize, El Salvador, eastern Guatemala and western Nicaragua. The National Hurricane Center says “the disturbance is forecast to be near hurricane strength when it moves near the eastern coast of Honduras on Friday and Saturday.”

The storm then will hit Belize and the Yucatan Peninsula early next week at or near hurricane strength. However, the strength and track of the storm is uncertain entering the Gulf of Mexico. Florida should monitor the system next week.

Some models are now projecting the system will combine with a US front, bringing rain to Florida mid-week. But the models are highly uncertain, and a rare November tropical ‘event’ could impact the state. Floridians should closely watch the developing forecast.
