JUNKIES: John Feinstein wonders if Qatari investment in Monumental Sports ups Ted Leonsis' bid for Nationals

The first Feinstein Friday of Summer saw John join the Junkies to talk a little NBA Draft (which he doesn’t really put much stock in day-of), athletes doing charity work, the new Wizards front office making moves, and a few other topics.

But the big one, to him, is the Qatari Investment Fund buying a small stake in Monumental Sports & Entertainment, making them the first foreign investment fund pushing into U.S. sports (minus the LIV Golf merger).

“You might say it’s just five percent and there’s no control – but I think Leonsis may take this extra $200 million to up his bid for the Nationals,” Feinstein said. “I think Ted wants to own the town, so that’s significant.”

It’s also another step, though, towards foreign entities becoming involved in U.S. sports. The NBA has

“It’s like opening Pandora’s Box; this will not be the last time a country with a lot of money invests in American sports teams,” Feinstein said. “They’re already invested in a lot of European soccer teams, and it’s just part of our world now.”

Jason Bishops said “I don’t know how I feel about this infiltration into sports,” and Feinstein called that right on the money.

“Infiltrate is a good word, because that’s what it is; they’re not doing it out of the goodness of their hearts, they have an agenda,” Feinstein said. “I don’t know what the agenda is, but it’s there – and if Ted buys the Nats, then the Qataris will have some influence with three of the four major teams.”
