The announcement by Dan Snyder and Josh Harris last Friday was met by some Washington Commanders fans with jubilation and others with a sort of meh this is the same thing that was reported a month ago. Well, while the NFL owners will still have to vote and it isn't over yet, Ben Standig made an important point when on with Kevin Sheehan Monday.
"Even though it feels similar to last month," Standig said, "But this was the very first time – regardless of the reporting or anything else – this is the very first time that Dan Snyder has said he is selling the team. And I think that is as significant as anything else. Because up until now the big wonder has been, was he gonna pull out every time there was a new story... but at this point, he has now said he is selling the team and that is, to me, the most significant thing that happened on Friday."
After talking about the sale news and what it means for Washington fans, Standig gave his impressions from the Commanders minicamp and first-round draft pick Emmanuel Forbes.
Standig describes one play that Forbes made that is exactly what Ron Rivera and Jack Del Rio would be looking for the cornerback to make and he revealed that the team has been lining up the No. 16 overall pick primarily in the slot, a position the defensive back did not play much at all during his college career.
Of course, this could absolutely be a case of the team taking a look at Forbes in the slot as draft pick Quan Martin, who will likely play nickel corner, had been excused by the team from minicamp due to personal reasons.
Also, "You could hear [Eric Bieniemy's] voice everywhere. Giving some tough love out there to these guys when they would be slow going up to the line of scrimmage," Standig told Sheehan. "His presence was notable."
"In terms of tone setting, Eric Bieniemy is the guy there," he added. "He is orchestrating everything, he's very prominent, he's loud in a football coaching kinda way. I definitely think this is Eric Bieniemy's offense, I don't think there is much doubt about that."
After talking minicamp, Standig and Sheehan got into the Philadelphia 76ers and the mixed results of "Trust the Process" in drafting superstars and consistently making the playoffs, but failing to win it all or even make a conference finals and how that relates to the new owner of the Commanders.
