Chris Russell was on the scene at FedEx Field for Sunday’s Commanders victory over Arizona, and on Monday’s show, he played a quick exchange with safety Kamren Curl that praised the defense that carried the game in the second half.
“Our defense, we just went out there and tried to do our jobs. We have the players and the ability to take over games, and that’s what we try to do,” Curl told Rooster. “We still have some things to clean up, but I thought we played a great game today.”
The Commanders beefed up their secondary with their first two picks at cornerback in the draft, but Kurl and his fellow safeties Darrick Forrest and Percy Butler are lynchpins back there who also constantly push each other to be better.
“We feed off each other for sure – if he makes a play I want to make a play, and vice versa,” Curl said. “Percy’s in that mix too, when we see 35 flying around. We all feed off each other and I really like when we’re all on the field together.”
Kurl led the team with 10 total tackles (one for loss) and defensed one pass Sunday, while Forrest (five tackles), Butler (three tackles/one TFL) and Jeremy Reaves (three tackles) totaled 21 for the safety unit on the day – and it’s going to take all of them coming together to help the strong front four get their jobs done.
“I know what we have in the secondary, and in the NFL, both sides will make some plays,” Curl said, “but as long as we keep going, stay together and stay consistent, we can be one of the top secondaries in the league. It’s one play at a time; we all know we’ll have adversity, but we have to put it behind us and move on. We have to have short memories and not let things snowball, and when they have explosives, we have to put the fire out real fast.”
