We are still months away from the NFL Draft, but a lot of the conversation in Washington will be focused on what the Commanders and new general manager Adam Peters will do with the No. 2 overall pick.
ESPN's Cole Cubelic has seen top quarterback prospects during his time as a analyst and he joined the Kevin Sheehan Show on Thursday to give his thoughts on LSU's Jayden Daniels, UNC's Drake Maye and the likely No. 1 overall pick USC's Caleb Williams.
So, if Williams is off the board, what would Cubelic do at No. 2 if he is Washington? "Am I allowed to utilize the trade-down option?" he asked Kevin Sheehan. "I think there are some decent quarterback depth in this draft that you could trade down and potentially land a guy. Now you're not gonna get Drake Maye. I'm not sold on Jayden Daniels going third or fourth. I think it's feasible, two might be a bit of a stretch."
Cubelic argues that with the Commanders having "multiple, massive positions of need" they need to trade down and accumulate extra picks to see what they can do later in the first round and early second. And if Washington decides to do that, they "might be able to grab a guy who can help you right away a little bit later in that round."
"If you're sold on taking a quarterback... I love Jayden Daniels," he continued, adding that Daniels received high praise from coach Brian Kelly and was somebody who was in the facility early all offseason watching film and working on the things he knew he needed to improve. "I actually think there's still a lot of growth potential in Jayden Daniels' game."
On Drake Maye, "I think your floor is a little higher, you're gonna go long with him. But I do think you're gonna have a higher ceiling with Jayden Daniels and I also think a lot of that is gonna depend on schematically what you want to install for your offense to be."
Before getting into all of that, Cubelic and Sheehan discussed the big news of Wednesday evening: Jim Harbaugh leaving Michigan a few weeks after winning a national championship to return to the NFL as the next head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers.
But there is so much more in the conversation on Maye vs. Daniels and if Williams is the best quarterback in the draft including how durability is a huge issue for Daniels as "he made extremely poor decisions while carrying the football" in college. Listen on the audio player above!
