Report: Carson Wentz could be out four weeks after finger surgery

Carson Wentz underwent surgery for a broken finger on his throwing hand, the Commanders announced Monday evening, and reportedly could be out for four weeks.

The Commanders released the following statement Monday evening announcing that Wentz underwent surgery in Los Angeles: "Carson Wentz suffered a fractured finger on his throwing hand this past Thursday night in Chicago. He underwent successful surgery today in Los Angeles by hand specialist Dr. Steven Shin at the Cedars-Sinai Kerlan Jobe Surgery Center. He will immediately begin rehab and is expected to make a full recovery."

Earlier in the day, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reported that the recovery timeline for Wentz remained unclear.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported that Wentz received a four-week recovery timeline after undergoing surgery which, best case, would likely keep Wentz sidelined until Washington's Week 11 game in Houston.

It's unclear at present time if the Commanders will place Wentz on Injured Reserve.

Grant Paulsen of 106.7 The Fan previously reported that Wentz's recovery could be as long as six weeks and that Taylor Heinicke would be his natural replacement on the field.

The Commanders announced Tuesday morning that they've signed quarterback Jake Fromm — a 2020 fifth-round pick out of Georgia by the Bills, who later played with the Giants — to their practice squad and released defensive tackle Donovan Jeter.
