From one former Washington star receiver to perhaps the next one: Santana Moss LOVES the addition of Stefon Diggs to the 2026 Commanders – even if he was ambivalent to the thought process that the Commanders actually NEEDED a guy like that.
“I was one of those guys on record saying I wouldn’t care if we went out and got another name like that, because I feel like we have a bunch of guys that can contribute to that WR2 position,” Moss told Ben Standig on Burgundy & Gold Today late Wednesday. “When you have so many other receivers, you wanna see these guys develop and get a shot to step into that void, but I’ve been a part of corps where we go with the guys we have – but to say the least, when you have a chance to get a guy like Diggs, and add that to the equation with Terry McLaurin and those other guys, it just made us better.”
Diggs signing in early August is perhaps a steal, as he has had 1,000 yards or more in seven of the last eight years and totaled 99 grabs, 1,128 yards, and eight TD between the regular season and playoffs for the Patriots last year – and more importantly played in all 21 of their games.
“He’s a dawg, man, he’s a pit bull. I love what he brings to the game,” Moss said. “Everyone is built different in how they go about their business, and he brings something we probably don’t have – but he’s one of those guys you will hear and see him. You get him riled up, you’ll hear from him, and see him strut his stuff. You need some of those guys on your team, and I’m glad he’s on board.”
And finally, after seven seasons where names like Kelvin Harrison, Cam Sims, and Aidan Humphries were statistically the WR2, with years where running backs and tight ends were truly the second-leading receiver – sometimes in the same season, like in 2020 when Logan Thomas and J.D. McKissic were second or third in both catches and yards – Terry McLaurin might finally have the WR2 opposite him that can allow him to truly dominate.
“Terry’s still blazing and running with the best of them, and is still a game-changer, one of the best in coming down with those 50/50 balls,” Moss said, “and when I watched Diggs play last year, he showed an edge to his game that showed he had something else in his bag. He found a way to get open and did it all, and he made plays, so I’m imagining him going out there and saying, ‘give me opportunities’ – and when you have JD5 at quarterback, the sky is the limit for those guys.”
And, perhaps, David Blough in his first season as offensive coordinator.
“When you have two dominant guys…it’s gonna get a lot of other guys wide open,” Moss said. “You look at some corps like the guys in Cincinnati, or Green Bay last year…we’ll all look forward to seeing how this pans out, but Diggs is one of those veterans who can get the job done, and with the body of work we’ve displayed here, guys like Diggs are ready to buy in, so I’m looking forward to this.”
