The Commanders have continued their promotions from within, naming former assistant offensive line coach Darnell Stapleton to the main OL coach gig, and also promoting Shane Toub to the assistant position.
Stapleton was the assistant to Bobby Johnson, who was also let go on the same day as Kliff Kingsbury and Joe Whitt Jr., the last two seasons after coming over from the University of Florida. The former Steelers lineman, who played three NFL seasons, has spent over a decade coaching offensive lines in college and in DC, and moves up into the top spot for 2026 on Dan Quinn’s staff.
Toub, who also played offensive line at the University of Dayton, spent the last three seasons as an offensive quality control coach in DC, working mostly with the line, and will now officially take over the assistant position. He has spent a decade in the coaching ranks since graduating from Dayton, working at both the Universities of Illinois and Kansas while also serving four years as a defensive quality control coach with the Bears.
His father, Dave, is a long-time NFL coach, and has been Andy Reid’s special teams coordinator in Kansas City since 2013 – and also served as assistant head coach since 2018.
Those two join former assistant QB coach and interim QB coach David Blough, who was promoted to offensive coordinator, as internal hires to fill top positions on the offensive staff this offseason.
