The Washington Commanders announced the promotion of four coaches on head coach Ron Rivera's staff and, reportedly, those would not have happened without Dan Snyder selling the franchise to a group led by Josh Harris earlier this summer.
Washington promoted Juan Castillo to the role of run game coordinator, Randy Jordan to senior offensive assistant/running backs coach, Travelle Wharton to offensive line coach and Todd Storm to tight ends coach on Rivera's staff.
Curiously, ESPN's Adam Schefter posted on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter, that "old ownership would not greenlight these promotions."
"But it remained on the top of Ron Rivera's list once the sale closed. And now it is done," Schefter posted 10 minutes after the Commanders' official announcement on X.
Castillo was the team's tight ends coach last year, his first in Washington. The 2023 season will be his 27th in coaching in the NFL.
Jordan will begin his 10th season with the Commanders franchise and he has been the running backs coach since 2014.
This will be Wharton's and Storm's fourth season with the franchise after both followed Rivera from Carolina and joined the head coach when he came to Washington ahead of the 2020 season. Wharton had served as the assistant offensive line coach in the previous three seasons and Storm was the assistant tight ends coach in 2022 and an offensive quality control coach from 2020-21.
