The Washington Football Team ranked second-to-last in fan attendance and had the second-worst gate revenue in 2021.
So, perhaps it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise to see the Commanders have picked up that ball and ran with it into training camp.
It is still a little jarring to see the crowd attendance for the Commanders' open practice at FedEx Field on Saturday.
One would presume the first year of the team playing under a new name and the third year of Ron Rivera's culture change era would bring more enthusiasm. But one would presume wrong.
Sometimes a fresh coat of paint isn't enough to cover up years of damage.
At the end of the day, we are talking about practice, not a game. Maybe things will look a little differently come the regular season.
What does seem clear is the only thing that may reignite the fanbase at this point is winning.
