The Washington Commanders are not expected to be big players at the top-end of the free agent market despite having some $90 million in salary cap space for new general manager Adam Peters to play with. But what if there was a creative way for Washington to use that cap space to make some additions to the roster that build for the long-term?
Well if you step back into the Team 980 time machine to March 9, 2017, you will be reminded of a deal the Cleveland Browns swung with the Houston Texans. You see, they helped the Texans clear some $16 million in salary space by taking on Brock Osweiler's massive bad contract.
For taking on the bloat, Cleveland's reward was a second-round draft pick in 2018 and sixth-round pick in 2017. (The Browns parted with a fourth-rounder in the deal.)
For Kevin Sheehan, this could be an interesting route that the Commanders and Peters could take, to use some of their voluminous cap space and stockpile some draft picks.
Could this be a way for Washington to help... the Denver Broncos out of the predicament of Russell Wilson's mammoth contract? (Of course, not for the entirety of his gargantuan cap hit.)
