Nineteen NFL head coaches have been in their current position since the start of the 2021 season. Only two have a worse betting ROI than Ron Rivera.

Rivera’s head-coaching career began with 46 wins against the spread (ATS) in his first 80 regular-season games (.582), all with the Carolina Panthers from 2011-15. In those five seasons, his teams had three consecutive ATS losses only once.

In 117 regular-season games since 2016, Rivera has only 55 ATS wins (.482), including only 18 in 41 games since 2021 (.462). His teams had three consecutive ATS losses four times.

Of the 19 coaches in at least their third season, only Andy Reid and Arthur Smith have a worse return on investment than Rivera. Here’s the bottom five:

Arthur Smith: -18.7%

Andy Reid: -11.4%

Ron Rivera: -11.3%

Kevin Stefanski: -10.8%

Robert Saleh: -9.1%

Unlike Smith and Reid, Rivera doesn’t have a positive season-long ROI in any of the last three years:

2023: -17.8%

2022: -4.6%

2021: -15.3%

If the Washington Commanders don’t turn things around this year, it will be the sixth time in the last eight years a Rivera-led team posted a negative ROI.

As of Tuesday’s NFL odds at BetMGM, the Commanders are a 6.5-point home underdog against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.
