There’s of course ALL kinds of talk around the Commanders’ No. 2 pick and the future of the QB situation, from trading up for Caleb Williams to taking their guy at 2 to trading down to collect picks if they guy they want may be there later – and even, now, the idea of trading for a QB or running it back with Sam Howell and going elsewhere in the first round.
And that’s an avenue the Junkies wanted to go down as an investigation Thursday – specificially, what about drafting an offensive weapon in Marvin Harrison Jr.?
It was an open line Thursday, and the guys have gotten a lot of comments on the idea of trading up for Williams, audio of which is on The Fan website and video on YouTube, and as Bish flat out said, “they’ve had two big No. 2 picks the last 12 years and both whiffed, big time, so hopefully this doesn’t happen again.”
Now, there are also a lot of “Howlers” out there who want this:
“There are even some that say the commanders should draft Marvin Harrison Jr., build up the offensive line, and then run it back with Howell and then see how he fares with a better offensive line and a better receiving corps,” JP said.
“I think that those people are fully insane,” was Cakes’ deadpan reply.
JP read Dan Quinn’s comments about Sam Howell, and yes, Quinn has seen Howell three times, but while Flaim doesn’t think it happens, EB could see a case.
“He’s played well against Dallas, and he was a different guy the last seven or eight games, but he clearly has some ability,” Bickel said. “But I think when you pick No. 2 in the draft and you have three quarterbacks that at this point seem to be so highly rated, I think you have to swing for one of them – I would be stunned if they did anything otherwise, unless there was a kind of a third or fourth guy they actually love a lot more and they think can get a little bit later.”
Maybe the regime is sold on Michael Penix, Bo Nix, JJ McCarthy, or someone, so the move is take the weapon a 2, see where those guys fall, then use 36 and 40 as leverage later if needed?
“But if they do that, they are not taking Marvin Harrison Jr. at two,” Bish said.
“If they did, I would love it because I think he's a 10-year superstar,” EB replied. “If they could get Harrison at 2 then, say with the 10th pick get McCarthy, because in their mind he’s just as good as one of the others?”
“Well, you better hit on that guy! If you pick Harrison Jr.
at 2 and wait on quarterback, you better be convinced!” Cakes blurted out.
There’s one comp that sees JJ McCarthy as a Joe Burrow type, so…
