'Get on board or get lost' on Sam Howell? Kevin Sheehan responds

Kevin Sheehan spoke at length last week about the Washington Commanders' presumptive starting quarterback Sam Howell. Sheehan talked about how if Howell were to be the long-term answer under center for Washington it would represent a massive longshot by Ron Rivera and the Commanders football brain trust paying off spectacularly. He also spoke to Ben Standig about the specifics of all the quarterbacks recently selected in the NFL Draft's later rounds who have succeeded (just three out of over 70).

And all of that talk led to the latest email from a listener, Randy, who has a history of some strong takes on Washington quarterbacks: "Are you trying to drive people crazy about Sam Howell? The conversation last week with Ben [Standig] was about as much as I could take. Teams past him over [in the draft], so what? They did the same thing with [Tom] Brady. They did the same with your boy [Kirk] Cousins. The guy has the best arm, the best accuracy, and the best mobility in one player we've seen here in quarterback EVER! He's the real deal. You're going to look stupid when he becomes THE STORY IN THE NFL THIS YEAR! Saying he won't be THE GUY is going to get you, Kev. I know you hate to hear this, but get on board or get lost."

Sheehan begins his response by admitting that he hopes Randy's letter proofs to be prophetic. It would be something for Washington, a team that has not started the same quarterback for every regular season game in a single season since 2017, to finally have a) stability at the position and b) a true solid NFL QB.

Of course, Sheehan takes umbrage with the characterization that he (or Standig) made any predictions about whether Howell will be successful. But he did point just point out that the odds of Howell succeeding are slim. "Long shots hit sometimes," Sheehan said, "but that doesn't mean that they weren't long shots at the starting gate. You never heard me say he won't be the guy, you've heard me say it will be a long shot that he's the guy because that part is true. The favorite in this thing is that he won't be the guy."

Sheehan then revealed that Randy has sent many emails in the past, and he decided to read one from last July: "Kevin, the draft picks and money are nothing for Carson Wentz. Are you really that mad at a [conditional] second and third-round pick for that guy? The Colts hated that he wasn't vaccinated, that's why he's gone from Indianapolis. The Eagles had a coaching change. Wentz was almost the MVP in 2017. Non-first-round draft choices, ARE YOU REALLY BEING SERIOUS? The only bad part about this is that Ron Rivera will keep his job for much longer than he deserves. Kevin, you got the Cousins thing right but you are going to look dumb on this one. The team is headed in the right direction at quarterback finally! Be a better fan for once!"

Oooooooooof. That was wrong when Randy wrote that and it is even more wrong less than a year later.

There was also a third email, from 2020, in which Randy agreed with Sheehan's take, but the result was both of them being wrong about the talent and how well then second-year quarterback Dwayne Haskins would play during his time in Washington in his first year under Rivera.

Later, Sheehan gets into who is the best combination of arm, accuracy, and mobility in Washington football history. Listen on the player above!
