When legendary eater Joe House calls to talk to Kevin Sheehan the first topic of business has to be one thing: food and restaurants in the Washington D.C. area he is looking forward to visiting.
And with the season over for the Capitals and Wizards short of the NHL and NBA playoffs, and the Nationals a "quadruple-A team" as House put it, there really isn't much on the field to talk about. So, the conversation quickly shifts to the sale of the Washington Commanders and what comes next with Dan Snyder leaving town.
With Josh Harris and Mitchell Rales – two guys with local ties – in poll position to take over control, does it make House's more hopeful about the future of the franchise?
"I'm glad that there is a local connection," House said. "But, yanno, we went down the road of local connection. I was glad 25 years ago when Snyder as a Silver Spring kid who grew up... in the same era that I did and grew up with those teams and understood the culture and tradition of the Washington football team and so I was optimistic with Snyder and so I think we learned a lesson the last 25 years."
House said he is more confident in Harris (the owner of the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils) because he has a track record as a sports owner in knowing how to be in charge of franchises that have had a modicum of success and have proven to be efficiently run.
While he believes the sale is going to happen because all of the news is out there and NFL owners don't seem keen on letting Snyder stick around, House is still worried that with Snyder there is always the possibility something comes up and everything falls apart.
House and Sheehan wrap up the conversation with some talk about the Wizards keeping Wes Unseld Jr. as head coach and Tommy Sheppard as general manager (and how he could be Ernie Grunfeld 2.0), how Washington should be looking to trade Bradley Beal and close with a little NBA playoffs talk that you will want to hear.
