JUNKIES: Was drafting Chase Young the lowlight and 'biggest sin' of Ron Rivera era?

What a day for the Junkies to all be back together: the Commanders lost again for an eighth straight misery Monday, but the misery finally ended for Ron Rivera when he was fired around 8 a.m.

Right in the middle of the Junks’ show, so we didn’t have to wait long for them to stop speculating and start reacting and reflecting – the latter of which actually came in the first hour of the show, when they looked back at the best and worst moments of the Rivera era.

“For me, the worst moment, and it was indicative of the entire era, was him not knowing the team could be eliminated from the postseason,” John-Paul Flaim laughed, “and the best would just be making the playoffs in Season 1, the little glimmer of hope there.”

“Heinicke diving for the pylon, that one play, it was just exciting,” Bish said above objections that they lost that game.

EB said he didn’t have a high, and JP even said that many respondents to the original question said the high was Ron’s firing and the low was his hiring, ‘just to be wise-asses.’

“You’re starting over from scratch, and everyone thinks that’s the greatest thing ever,” EB said. “It’s a necessary evil, but there’s no guarantee it’s roses on the other side.”

“It’s just reflecting on how loser you are!” Valdez shot in from behind the glass.

And in that vein…

“The biggest sin of the era in retrospect, and people said it was the right move at the time, was drafting Chase Young,” JP said. “It carried on throughout his tenure, them trying to figure out quarterback. He could’ve drafted Tua or Herbert, but they went patchwork and then rolled with Howell. There were some nice moments, but it just crashed and burned.”

“If Ron had any sort of personnel chops, he would’ve walked in, saw Dwayne Haskins play for five or 10 minutes, and went and had a meeting with Dan Snyder,” Cakes replied. “He should’ve said, ‘look, I know this was your personal pet pick because your kid went to high school with Haskins, but he can’t be my QB. You made this pick, it was a bad pick, I’m gonna pick either Tua or Justin Herbert and set sail with one of those guys.’”
