The Junkies wonder exactly what kind of competition is going on among Commanders receivers
The Commanders’ WR1 is one of the top wideouts in the league, but beyond Terry McLaurin and former first-round pick Jahan Dotson, it’s a selection of rookies and players usually lower down depth charts – which was part of why the team brought in Martavis Bryant on Tuesday.
But given that Bryant isn’t so much an impact WR2 as a big, veteran target that Dan Quinn knows from last year in Dallas…the Junkies wonder if people are overrating the entire group as a whole right now?
“One of the things that people have noted is that while most of the starters didn't play that much, many of them didn't even play at all (Saturday), but Jahan Dotson was on the field a lot,” JP said. “Great rookie season for Dotson, a lot of optimism heading into year two but it was a bust.
He dropped some balls, and didn’t really improve upon his first year. He had less total yards in five more games.”
“He slightly did,” EB replied. “I would say it wasn’t great, but it wasn’t a bust.”
Either way, expectations were higher for Dotson, and JP wonders how much of the Brandon Aiyuk chatter was because there’s not as much trust in Dotson and the staff knows the room needs some upgrading?
“I do myself, and I wonder if Dan Quinn feels that way too,” Bish said. “Quinn doesn't care where you were drafted with the previous coaching staff, so maybe he feels like (Dotson) has to go out there and prove something.”
The guys played Quinn’s answer about Dotson’s extended snap count Saturday, which basically said it’s trying to figure out positions, and yeah, it seems as if outside of McLaurin, it’s all up for grabs.
“I do think there's a lot of competition; maybe you could say they're all sort of middling and none of them beyond Terry are stars, but I would say a guy like Dyami Brown been a bust,” EB said. “Those seasons were bust when he was catching 15-20 balls.”
“Well, maybe when they look at the film and they, they look way past the stats and they look at the film and see what they could’ve done better or did wrong,” Bish said. “They obviously don't feel like he's safe there, because he wouldn't be playing as much, and they went out and drafted a receiver. I don’t think he's gonna get cut, but maybe they're just saying he's got to go out and prove that he's our true No. 2.”
EB thinks Olamide Zaccheus is a wild card, as is third-rounder Luke McCaffrey, so it’s going to be an ‘interesting’ situation with ‘nothing guaranteed’ – except for the fact that you can listen to the whole convo above!
