Sunday marks two months to the NFL Draft, so still a lot of time to discuss strategies and ideas for the Commanders at No. 2…and with the Combine starting next week and the league year beginning March 1, we may get some movements or indications soon.
But here’s an interesting scenario presented by one draft pundit that the Junkies wondered about as a viable strategy: Jerod Mayo has said the Patriots, at 3, will go with the best player available, not necessarily a quarterback – something Bish thinks means they’re willing to find a QB by other means.
Said pundit, Matt Miller, Tweeted that the Pats SHOULDN’T go QB at 3 because that roster is not ready for a rookie QB, noting not just how but WHY the Bryce Young/CJ Stroud situation worked out as it did.
“We’ve just gone through the Ron Rivera era here, where that was all he was preaching, was building the roster until we find the QB,” Cakes said. “I think that’s doing it backwards. You find the quarterback and then build the roster around him.”
“I’d bet if the Panthers could re-do the draft, they’d still take a QB, it would just be CJ Stroud,” Bish said. “You can fill holes in the draft after you take your QB, or do it in free agency. Washington surely can, because of so much cap space.”
So, with Washington at 2, is ‘best player available’ and waiting on the QB, perhaps, a viable strategy?
“They have the cap space to bring in a really good lineman, and a lot of picks in the Top 100, so they may be able to plug holes better than New England can,” JP said.
“Washington isn’t going to come back with Sam Howell as QB1, just like the Pats won’t with Mac Jones – but it doesn’t have to man drafting a quarterback,” Bish said.
“I am 100 percent diametrically opposed to that sort of roster-building concept,” Cakes reiterated.
What are your thoughts? Take a listen to the entire convo above as you formulate?
