Sam Howell played well on Monday night and is QB1 Week 1, the seventh different Week 1 starter for the Commanders in the last seven years.
And if you ask the Junkies, some of them say it’s okay to have an opinion that Howell still might struggle (sup JP and Bish), even if he’s looking good so far – but others think that’s draft status elitism?
“The QB situation is always the hot button in this city, but I’ll say this: I don’t know why everyone has to be on the same side with Sam Howell,” Bish said. “There’s still 99.9 percent of the season to go, and he has to play consistent for 17 games. Let’s see how he looks against the ones every week.”
“People get caught up in the moment,” Cakes said, with EB adding this: “JP at least says if he goes five or six weeks that he continues to play like this, he’ll say Howell looks the part and will admit he was wrong.”
Bish wants a full season, but if Howell plays well against good teams, he’ll admit he was wrong, to an extent…yet still wonders why his opinion is invalid until then?
“I think your opinion is largely based on his draft status – if he was drafted in the second round, your opinion would be different,” EB said.
Bish’s response was that a second-round QB would have a longer leash…but Cakes sneers at even that?
“For the most part, I look at them with the side-eye,” Cakes said. “Desmond Ridder, he was in the third round, and I think Heinicke is going to push him for his gig.”
To EB though, Howell’s draft status isn’t a true measure of his talent.
“It’s the hardest job in the world! He went on the fifth-round largely because of measurables – he’s not that tall – so they killed him on that, and because he had to run around like a chicken with his head cut off his junior year,” EB said.
Bickel would rather lay his eyes than JP’s odds, but that brought in the memory of another former Washington QB.
“I’ve only seen him have 11 completions! Kyle Allen, who you are a fan of, got the start in the last preseason game for the Bills and played just as well…but he’s Kyle Allen!” JP exhorted. “Look at Mitch Trubisky – guys can play like this in the preseason. You have to see it in the regular season, and even if he ends up as the QB of the future, he’s probably going to struggle his first year.”
JP then recalled how he was excited about Kenny Pickett after a preseason game last year, and got killed for it – and indeed, Pickett struggled,
“Here’s when I’ll be a full-blown believer: if he leds them to a 3-1 or 2-2 record in the first four games,” Cakes said. “If he does that, I’ll buy in.”
Bish and EB both think it’s possible, so maybe some crow coming to DC mornings in October?
