The true definition of team players: the Junkies discussed the Twitter beef that spawned Tuesday between Robert Griffin III and our own Grant Paulsen, and it seems the guys are on team Grant & Danny when it comes, at least, to RG3 throwing his name out there as a QB who can still play but isn’t employed because he’d be too much of a distraction.
“No one is upset, it’s just typical Robert, and it’s funny,” EB said. “We had Robert on every week, we love him, but he’s a narcissist. He wants to make everything about himself and includes himself in there. I’m sure he can still play physically, in that he’s an elite athlete, but he was not that great at quarterbacking at the NFL level. Maybe there’s truth that he’s not in the league because he’d be a distraction, but it’s funny he keeps interjecting himself in the discussions.”
Cakes and JP then mentioned what Grant retweeted of that video, and how RG3 went at Grant…and that’s when EB told a story many may not know.
“Grant covered the team at that time, and I remember him and RG3 going at it – there was argument among the media guys if Grant could return a kick to the 20 yard line, and Robert referenced it at the podium,” EB said. “They’re buddies in that sense, and from Robert’s perspective, I could see why he’s upset – but from Grant’s perspective, he’s just retweeting it because he thinks it’s funny.”
“I don’t think he meant any ill will or harm – Robert just got in his feelings,” Cakes laughed.
The guys then played Grant’s response after relaying RG3’s point of Zach Wilson being the best choice, and, well, EB is glad Grant addressed it, and the guys are happy they did it on the air.
“Smart of him to basically say he wouldn’t battle with Robert unless he comes on the show,” Cakes said.
Here’s the thing: JP doesn’t think Robert was lying when he said a GM told him he could still play, but as EB noted, ‘maybe he was just being nice.’
“It still doesn’t mean he’s one of the Top 64 quarterbacks out there,” Bish said. “He may be one of the best 64 athletes, but quarterback? Different story. His skills went down considerably.”
“I do think there is truth to his point – could he help a team as a third-stringer? Maybe,” EB said. “The guy we don’t talk about any more has more talent than most backups, but you should see the toxicity with Carson Wentz’s name. The same with Robert, but he also hasn’t played well in 10 years.”
“Teams would rather play it safe than bring in the celebrity quarterbacks, go with guys like a Ben DiNucci,” JP added. “I do think there’s something to his point, but we’ll see if Wentz finds himself back in the league – because once a guy is an accomplished starter, and the league decides his time has passed, they just move on. There are a set of guys they’re comfortable with as backups, and to Robert’s point, there’s a set of guys they’re NOT comfortable with backups. I said it years ago that Robert would be out of the league by the time he was 30.”
Take a listen above as the guys go on about the cost-benefit analysis of having a ‘safer’ backup quarterback and the whole point of the beef!
